Before electric signal lights were in use many trucks (or lorries, if you prefer) had a sort of mechanical hand on an arm that was hinged able to indicate turn or stop (the stop signal doubled as turn left for right hand drive vehicles.

I could not find a decent photo but the one below will giive you the idea.
