With my good lady we found a lot of extra packing could be achieved by her not putting shoes in any small case or soft bag. Instead she made out of fabric 6 or 8 (can't remember which) sausage shaped bags linked together each linked together with cord around 30cm long. The bags with shoes in them could then be used to fill various "holes" and were easy to carry thrown over one shoulder.
