Well, as an update I went into Exeter with my spare keys this morning and tried the Morgan. No dice. So, I thought, why not swap the relays around, see if that does anything. From the diagram I assumed relay 1 and two would be starting from the left, so I swapped them over and bingo! Car started fine. Switched off, rang Berrybrook and stsrted the car again on my way to get a new relay.
Get to Berrybrook, switch off. Lovely mechanic there has a look, takes the relays out and puts them back and then we can't start the car at all. I leave it with him and go off to Powderham for a coffee and when I come back he tells me he's replaced the fuel pump relay which was faulty, but it wasn't either of the ones I fiddled with as the position one relay (starter) is the right hand side and the fuel pump is number 2, next to it-How very odd!
Anyway, all seems ok now, I've asked them to get me a spare, and they say that while it was a known problem with older 4/4s this is the first recent one they've known to fail.
Thanks to all who suggested it as a solution, it does seem odd that the car restarted in the supermarket on Sunday after several attempts but there we are. Hopefully that's an end to it and thanks to Bradley at Berrybrook who is an absolute gentleman.
