My 2005 has a coating which is best described as thinned grey hammerite. I doubt it was a diy job in the first three years, so is probably factory.


I gather from enquiries that chrome plating aluminium isn't easy and a base application of copper first is essential.

I suspect your 2005 is the same as mine although I was convinced it was powder coat of some form. Having stripped it I think it's paint. How well it lasts is a matter of pot luck. I don't remember when I first noticed an issue but it was a long time ago. It wasn't addressed as I was using the car to get to work and I thought the comercial solutions too expensive.


The stuff on my Roadster is paint and I suspect it was applied after paint. The masking is average, but after 13 years it remains intact. I've had the screws out and Coppaslipped them, which probably helps.
