Very perceptive egginb. My first headgear, aged about five was a grey knitted balaclava worn with a duffle coat. Who says hoodies are new eh? Then aged 11 it was a school cap - Just William style - it was bottle green with two pale blue segments, and a white rose on the front. After that I only dabbled with a hat once aged 19, when I made myself a Jackie Stewart style corderoy hat in blue. It wasn't up to much. Over 30 years passed with nothing more than a bobble hat or two knitted by my mother, until at the onset of fifty, I found myself with a waterproof flat cap, a waterproof brimmed hat and a summer basket weave brimmed hat. Although MrsW wet herself at the sight of these initially, she can control her mirth much better now.
Then the Morgan came along, and as you have found, a peak is essential when the sun gets low. So now I have three baseball caps, and sometimes a woollen hat over the top when it's cold, but so far I don't have one with ear muffs.
