Sadly, ever since I read Bruce Marshall’s book “the white rabbit”, about F.F.E. Yeo-Thomas, that carol for me has an unpleasant association.

Yeo-Thomas was one of the most significant, and courageous SOE agents in WWII. After being betrayed, captured and tortured for months by the Gestapo, he was sent to Buchenwald. He recalled hearing the SS guards of the camp singing Silent Night.

Ever since, whenever I hear it, I think of him, and if all that he went through.
