Mine was hacked a few years back. I found an extra email address had been planted in my account with a name very similar to my own. It sent messages of woe and pleas for money to everyone in my contacts list. When I went to email everyone to warn them it was a scam, found my contacts had disappeared along with my stored folders of emails. This came about when working on something else, I received a message looking like a genuine BT sign in box, asking me to re-affirm my password. I didn’t notice the fake email address that had just one letter different to my own!
BT helped me remove the offending item and recovered my contacts list and folders. For the next year or so, spurious emails would still be sent to some of my contacts as i guess my contacts list was sold on to scammers.but it gradually decreased and is now non existant. BT advised that changing my email address would not solve the problem of scam emails going out with my name imprinted on them.
