No, that bit of advice wouldn't have been in the handbook, but when people started complaining that the handbrake wouldn't hold the car on even a slight slope, let alone a hill, the advice then trickled out, I suspect from the factory to dealers and on to owners. I have lengthened the leverage of the 'hidden' part of the handbrake lever, which seems to help, but out of habit I still put my foot on the foot brake. How it will work at MoT time I'm not sure, as the handbrake is tested on a moving roller?
