Hi All
Decided to have a proper look at the OE high Viz rear brake light on my 2012 4/4 Sport. I fitted the accessory high viz lamp Dave W so kindly made for me a couple of weeks ago and noticed that the factory high viz was not working. Access is terrible but I managed to splice into the wiring and so was not that worried (at first) as it couldn’t be seen anyway with the spare wheel and carrier rack fitted.
That was until the ‘Virgo’ in me couldn’t accept something not working so as it’s week 3 after Chemo I had a play, first it’s a bu**er but all the rear trim needs pulling, well most of it, then there is a massive plastic inner box/liner that sits under where the spare wheel panel is fitted for ‘other’ Trads, that’s a fun job to remove believe me! Then I could access the lamp and wiring.
What a mess, I think it must have been wired by Stevie Wonder! A real rats nest of wires and block connectors, very badly done and wires changing colours randomly. And then I found the OE High Viz lamp unit had been stuck in place with Silicon!!! Have fun if you ever need to change it. I also noted that because the rear panel has no access panel incorporated if you ever need to access the fuel pump your in for fun and games.
I pulled out most of the block connectors and ‘Joseph’s Coat’ wiring and set to and after a couple of hours not only is it rewired with shrink wrap crimped connectors the OE brake lamp is working (just a rubbish bullet connector that was badly crimped).
It’s not exactly rocket science as it’s basic lighting wiring it’s just very sad that more care and workmanship had not gone into the build. The amount of dust tells me it’s never been disturbed so I am convinced it’s as it left the factory.
