This is the architecture of the future for many reasons. By holding it in a central site they can do so much more with it in order to benefit the user.
This is how Apple shares your content across all of your devices to provide a seamless user experience.
It also reduces the costs (hardware in the remote device, 1,000,000s of cars) software updates (slow and done wrongly kill the cars central nervous system costing warranty ££)
It also allows them to observe trends and design accordingly to provide us with cooler better stuff quickly. For each Pro there is a Con of course.
Would I trust Apple to do this for me. Yes. Would I trust Farcbook. ha ha ha ha ha. Would I trust any of them if I did not HAVE to, no.
If it is free or worse still advertising funded and big enough to be a target then you have to ask how much can be dedicated to securing it and ensuring the admins are on point.
I would be interested to see the path of a UK Police warrant being served for an MB car in the UK which was caught in an operation.
Does MB have the "Cloud" in a German datacentre (European law and German privacy being strict)
How will a post Brexit request from the UK be handled by the German agencies on request to release the information.
Is the necessary treaty in place to support this already and continuing to be honoured post Brexit ?
Most importantly what is in the licence agreement we all click through without reading. I will admit to never having read one in my life.
So that will depend on where the "Cloud" is floating above (which country is the data stored in) and who generates it (UK, US or German company) given the complexity of the law around this area?
I find this area very interesting which tells me I really need to get out in the car more.
