Well that was a fun half day spent on Sunday dismantling and then reassembling the dash. Fitted one of Cains machined anodised aluminium veneers and I'm rather pleased with the result. The whole central instrument panel has to be stripped down and reassembled so that the switches fit on rather than under the veneer. The non-functioning (on the 4/4) immobiliser LED was an issue as the only way to remove it from the original panel and then refit it correctly in the new one is to cut the wires and re-solder. Also the heater and fan knob grub screws were a pain to get to.
Having now removed the dash I now know what I'd do differently next time and having followed the helpful advice on here to make sure that I labelled everything and took copious photos on my mobile phone as I went, it all went back together and everything works. Which is nice!
Very useful place this forum. Thank you.
