Hi Andy, I think I assumed a little more than the 50mm or so that DaveW suggested for leaf spring models when I designed my aluminium tool tray as shown below. In case its not obvious the top of the diff housing part of tray is flush with the mounting edges.

Main issue is clearance for outer ends of top links each side, particularly the bolt heads (see below). Measurements on mine revealed they were assymetric to the mounting surface so incorporated that in design such that deepest part of tray sits between their range of travel. Not surprising much later when fitting new rear coilovers, that the whole axle was found assymetric to the chassis by a similar amount (5mm). Easily corrected with panhard rod but alignment with rear arches needs to be considered as well.

As I needed to fit shorter anyway to avoid chaffing on rear wiring loom I sourced and fitted dome head socket bolts to outer end of top link mounts, as OE are 5mm too long. The dome head offers a tiny bit more clearance for tray.
