G, your mention of the air filter makes me ask the additional question of when an ITG filter should be changed for a new one. I regularly clean mine but I have had it for nine years. Meabh.
I've seen blurb which claims that the ITG TriFoam filters can last up to 15 years but on a personal level, I'd be loath to keep one that long- even with regular washing.
As to the washing/re-oiling, I work on about 8-10,000 miles but again, I've seen longer intervals recommended
It really is very important NOT to overoil them though
Before I fitted the ITG I looked hard at all the options ( K&N, Green, Pipercross etc) I was very taken with BMC's Carbon Dynamic Airbox but I couldn't find a way to package it
For my money, ITG's closed system Maxogen is the one to go for- but at the end of it all, it's a very personal thing and the dyno don't lie
