I used to work in the cigar business. High volume stuff like Hamlet but I did make one brand of 100% Cuban tobacco. I still have the last one made ( by myself) when we discontinued the brand. Our buyer met Castro several times. A VERY canny man only allowing the lesser grades of tobacco out to non Cubans. He kept the best for his home produced cigars.
The advice above is the way to go. If you know which cigars he likes then go that route.
An added taster for him......give him a bottle of Benedictine. He can dip the mouth end of a cigar in it to give a taste variation.
One cigar brand I made had sweetener added to the mouth end to give a slight sweet taste.
The Philippines is a big cigar producer too. We did a deal with one company there to make some for us. Flavoured cigars. It was fun coordinating things with them due to the time zone difference!
