I used 1mm thick aluminium sheet on the mat near the pedals. Bought from diy chain B&Q.
I used pop rivets with washer backing to fix it. Been in place for a few years and still ok.
It was mk2 as mk1 was a bit small and I kept catching my heel on the edge.
The 1mm thick is flexible enough to form in other areas too.
