Ian, like you in that I too did not have a clue as to the general operation of a breakdown insurance though I do have it on my Morgan and other vehicle policies Which is just as well..!
For the first time in all the years we have had it, my good lady was in need of it with her 4x4 at the weekend. Ourr policy for the 4x4 was with Allianz Global Assist. Perhaps an hout after phoning a local recovery company tec turned up in a small van, plugged in his scanner and diagnosed the issue, and advised that the car should not be driven. The Tec then arranged for one of his company`s flatbed trucks to come and pick up the car. Apparently a busy Saturday early evening. thus the wait from the first call to Allianz and the flatbed turning up took circa 4 1//2 hours..Fortunately we were sitting in a car park... I guess it is possible there will be a priority system dependant on location etc..?

Additionally, and may be of interest..having chatted to the tec he advised as the 4x4`s main dealer was closed, perhaps the best option given our situation and location, that recovery to our home might be the best option, and from there we coulld arrange with the dealership when they might be able to begin the repair process... and once that was confirmed another flat bed would be arranged to pick the car up from our house for it then to be delivered to the dealership at whatever pre-arranged time was agreed..

Once the flat bed turned up the keys were handed to the recovery driver we were able to leave him to it and head off home and wait for the car to be delivered, which it was. I noted the the driver took pics of the dash (mileage..?) and the four corners of the car... No doubt in the case there might be claims of damaged caused by the recovery processes. All in all it seemed a pretty efficient operation, other than the 4 1/2 hours of waiting around.

Come Monday morning dealership contacted and arrangements for circa 2 weeks ahead, Allianz were again contacted to arrange the flatbed pickup date and time in order for it to be delivered to the dealership at the arranged time... Fingers crossed.

Hope that helps Ian.
