I think the covers for the GDI engine are about stopping water coming in through the louvres pooling in the castings on top of the engine ... though I may be wrong !🙂

Yes, GDI and the earlier Duratec twin cam engines suffer from corroded sparking plugs. The plugs sit vertically in almost 6 inch deep holes situated in the centre line of the engine, Hence the covers. I have often wondered though how other things like plug leads might be affected by the extra heat retention.
