Graham you must be either younger or older than I thought if you can't remember the colour you were thinking of is "Candy Apple Red". somestick

The base silver is sprayed first and then the transparent colour coat is sprayed over the top. It was very popular in the '60s and several Italian motorcycles were finished in that type of paint. The legendary Moto Guzzi V7 Sport was finished in a green "candy apple" called Legnano Verde after a famous brand of racing bicycle finished in the same colour.
