I can't be 100% sure, but I strongly suspect Morgan achieved the 40hp increase over the already excellent NC2 engine simply by virtue of their excellent long tube header exhaust manifold, the ITBs, and the Omex ECU they added.

What I suspect is the cams will be stock Mazda NC2 items, this means if you added a set of mild fast road cams that SSL 5 link equipped Plus 4 Super Sports would be knocking on the door of 220hp. Let's say a Super Sports weighs 920kg which is about right, 220hp would give it a power to weight ratio of 240 bhp per ton. To put this into perspective, that's about the same as a 2020 supercharged Lotus Elise Sport. The 217hp supercharged Elise weighs 924 kg with power to weight calculated at 234.8 bhp per ton, Lotus quoted this Elise as delivering a 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds, TBH any small light car with roughly 240 bhp per ton is going to make for a very rapid road car.

Personally I prefer the Mountune MR200 long runner inlet manifold/plenum design over ITBs, sadly these are virtually impossible to find as they haven't been produced for years, fortunately Fusion Fabrications make a copy that closely follows the Mountune design, this is what I fitted to my standard Duratec Plus 4 with great results. A long runner plenum inlet will give more torque and will make the Super Sports more refined and easier to live, unlike ITBs a plenum inlet allows you to retain the idle air control valve which provides OEM cold starts and warm ups, you might sacrifice a tiny bit of throttle response and 5hp at the very top end over ITBs but in my opinion the long list of advantages far outway any negatives.

Saying that I've never driven a Super Sports and unlike a standard Duratec Plus 4, the NC2 Duratec in the SS has the considerable advantage of variable valve timing. This has the very real potential to add low end and mid range torque while at the same time delivering excellent top end power. VVT is like being able to change your high torque cams to fast road cams on the fly, TBH it's game changing technology as it really does give you the best of all worlds.

I'd definitely take another look at that SSL 5 link equipped Plus 4 Duratec, I assume it's this one?

If so it looks delightful in Iris Blue and should prove to be hilarious fun, I've owned a lot of fast cars over the years including a tuned TVR Chimaera and a 470hp Aston Martin V8 Vantage, but none of them were as much fun as my tweaked Duratec Plus 4 on the right road. Being an Elise owner you'll know all about the benefits of a small light car on British roads, a Morgan Plus 4 just injects a classic/vintage car twist to the mix which in my opinion adds huge charm and another dimension to the ownership experience.

My Morgan Plus 4 certainly gets more positive attention than any other car I've owned, including that beautiful Aston Martin.
