I do enjoy tinkering but don't usually get under. I was also worried about the weight of the seat but just laid it on its side as suggested.
How it got bent up I don't know, but think I must have caught it getting in, I put a bend back in it by hand using the vice.
So all fixed and the bonus of a good upholsterer.
