It's not an exact science as there are many variables, but most tend to use something in the order of -18% for their drivetrain losses calculation.
Thank you Montegue -- as I recall engine output on an early VW bugs was something south of 40 hp in total (on a good day...). It is amazing how much power wanders off to the pub twixt engine and asphalt!
