Why are they called "metalled roads" when there is no metal in them?



It's sad, but I do know this one. The word 'metal' (from Greek metallon) originally meant any quarried or mined product such as rock or ore, though nowadays the common meaning is the refined end-product of an ore. There is a neat twist here because my engine worked most of its life hauling rocks from a quarry for road-building.
