It's a balance between acceptable and perceived risk. We all do this when it comes to car buying.
But the number plate thing differs in that it's also a date specific legal requirement, so really it isn't optional anyway.
Ah, but if your post had said "it's illegal and we all really should follow the law" then I would agree with you, but you didn't, you opined it was a safety issue
I will accept the balance of acceptable risk, maybe if I were in an old car I may defer but I'm in a 2010 with all that brings with it
