The whole problem here is how the motor industry is driven by ... politicians.....The target for years has been "tailpipe emissions" which push them towards lighter vehicles and electric power plants... BUT...The real answer should be what in the industry is known as "well to wheel" or whole life cycle carbon impact. This crucially takes into account the carbon impact of making the vehicle, "fuelling" the vehicle and recycling it at end of life. The reality is now we see vehicles being made lighter by use of Carbon Fibre which is one of the most planet unfriendly materials there is.. difficult and energy using to make and virtually impossible to recycle... I still think the good old combustion engine has a long way to go yet... for example if you run it on Natural Gas (methane) it is instantly 25% cleaner than petrol/diesel.. Audi sent out a press release yesterday about how they are working with a fuel supplier to use micro organisms to make ethanol (which can be used to power ICE) from waste water and sunlight... now there is a thing if they pull it off... The biggest issue electric cars still have is basic physics...1Kg of Petrol produces the same energy as 100Kg of batteries..

somewhere on the WEB there is an article - i think from Cranford college that says that a Morgan is as green as a Toyota Pious because of the green way they are made.
I am sure that the old "Salty Sea Dog" will remember it.

I remember now, it was speedmog not Mr Tony who wrote about Electric cars are only as clean as the principle energy source. Electric power is France is Nuclear, in China coal. p.s. pleased to see that this comment on such a significant subject is my 1900 post on TM. To be boring a Eur Ing, C Eng MIChemE and not a green car salesman I fully agree with Graham.
And just wait till we try to recycle all those old batteries from Priuses etc.
Fossil fuels aren't green but electricty comes from them & alas the internal combustion engine is better at extracting the energy than a power station.
We need renewables in a big way to break the cycle.
Mr Morgan I have solar panels so you can always ask me to test your cars!

I am sure that the old "Salty Sea Dog" will remember it. I remember that article (virtually) in the Centenary year and the Smart for 2 came out top. It was the year I swapped my +8 for the Sport. so it is! For whole life cycle I bet Morgan are greener... I would like to think so Graham, but calculating the energy expended for say a 4/4 against, say a small, locally/regionally built mass produced car would be challenging to do...could actually be a close competition with efficiencies in mass production these days. It all depends how you calculate it, I guess. One thing I really like about the Morgan's construction is the purity of it's components, making it so easy to recycle....the only trouble with that potential benefit is that very few are recycled.....they just get referbished and carry on giving mobility and great pleasure !

Not only the principal energy source - take Pious batteries for example - twice around the world from original material being mined, refined, turned into batteries and eventually installed in cars.
....not to mention that with current battery technology there isn't enough refineable lithium on the plant to replace the existing cars with electric ones.
