I also use moly grease & the last Roadster did 30,000 miles on plastic bushes with no play up to the time it caught fire...
I do mine about every 1000 miles.

Neil, the first time I greased the suspension on my new Roadster I thought it must be a candid camera stunt! I kept pumping but nothing came out. I looked for a pile of grease on the floor: nothing. Then eventually, some came out. I don't reckon the factory put much in...

After that, the suspension & steering were much better, so don't give up on the grease gun!

Hi Ian, having juuuust got my hands clean after a Mr Bean episode in the garage with the grease gun (don't ask) I'm not minded to tackle this again for a couple of days!

The good doctors at BHM told me that the new bushes feature some kind of 'rifling' (for want of a better expression) that enable the grease to reach the bottom better. Therefore it's not absolutely vital to grease the bottom nipple (snigger).

What's your routine?

I pumped as hard as I could until my wrists gave out - but had no idea if any was coming out. Can't type this without sniggering. My mind is in a schoolyard gutter this evening, sorry!

Hi Neilda, I found the greasing issue a bit of an issue when I got my car about a year ago. I realigned the nipples, using fibre washers as spacers, so that I could attach the grease gun without removing the wheels.
I bought a flexible tube to attach to the grease gun easier to put on take off.
And I use Nitrile gloves to keep my hand clean. This prevents me getting grease on the car/brakes etc.
I grease the bottom first, the clean off the excess and then I put grease into the top nipple and then clean off the excess.
What you need is a friendly owner to show you how to do it and then you will be fine.

Sounds as if none's going in. As suggested in another post, it may be worth taking a nipple out, put it on the grease
gun & see if any comes out. Having said that, I was surprised at how much grease went in mine. Next time should be back to normal ( about 5 pumps )

I jack the front up, set it on a couple of axle stands then grease the lower nipples from underneath. I then do the upper ones from behind the wheel after turning to full lock ( the old Roadster didn't have the top nipples, more work!) . Shouldn't need to take the wheels off.

Since having the wrench, the wheels come off easily.... So I don't find that a chore.

Hmmmm. I shall have to persevere.. I may invest in a different gun too. The pistol grip is tiresome.

My handbook says every 1,00 miles - but I tend to do them about every 8-9 hundred to make sure. My nipples faced the wrong way originally but were persuaded to turn by judicious use of a spanner - very light pressure was used - so did not need to put in a washer

Begs the questions,
How did the factory get grease into it?
When in the process do they grease a new unit during build?
How much Grease do they put in that first time?
What Brand of Grease does the Factory Use for Sliding Pillars?

I have one of those old BP Morgan Lubricating Charts. It specifies BP Energrease L2 Wheel Bearing Grease
Rolls Royce / Bentley equivalent chart lists :-

I use 'Comma High Performance Bearing Grease (Heavy Duty Lithium Complex Grease)'

With the wheels off, the inward facing nipple isn't a problem to reach....

Well I got my self an air powered grease gun and have now greased the wheels.

The bottom nipples look impossible to reach, so I didn't use them. But from the top I was able to get enough grease at the top and can see it appearing at the bottom. Which I assume is the signal that it's time to stop!

Is it bad practice not to grease from the bottom?

I'm hoping to take it for a drive tomorrow.

The good thing about this thread, is when 'er indoors asked me how we TMers seem to find to so much to talk about, I was able to tell her "We mainly talk about nipples and lubrication"
