The hotel has $25, the bellboy $2 which is $27 - the amount the 3 men paid. The bellboy did not spend anything so why add it to the amount the 3 men had spent?

No I'm not - I said they only paid $9 which is the $10 they originally paid less the $1 they got back from the bellboy.

giving the £5 back meant the guys individually had only paid £8.33 +1 they where given back = £9.33r x 3 = £28 + 2 the Bell boy retained = £30

The men gave over $27. $25 went to the hotel and $2 to the bellboy. Every dollar accounted for.
