Although VAT (consumption tax) along with these other punitive european car taxes is another tax they avoid across the pond in the land of the fiscal cliff.
(Small state taxes sometimes charged).
Having said that we need the extra tax for things like having to try and deport Abu Quatada (£13 million spent so far).
They would have had him safely tucked away in Guantanamo Bay or somewhere by now.

I did not pay anything in Sweden when I bought my 2004 Roadster in UK.

VAT is the fairest Tax we have Except when it is levied on top of already high 'Duty' levels...

Ken - Different rules for secondhand cars - and a margin scheme.
The old complaint about being an unpaid tax collector is not technically true. All VAT on goods for resale can be deducted from the output tax due(on sales), but more important is the ability of registered business to reclaim VAT on expenses - which Joe Public can't do.

I remember the last VAT visit we had. The guy spent all day going through the records, getting more & more frustrated. In the end he said "I'm not going to find anything, am I?" I said no. He said " One last try. There's an invoice for a camera here. Show me the camera". So I went into the office & got said camera, at which point he said "No one can ever do that! I'm going home!" Haven't seen him since
