Bloody freezing when you get to your car at 5.45 and it's -8 degrees!

'My dream is a car with a parking heater...'
I'm with you on this, Cicerone, real luxury. You can keep all your electric windows and door mirrors and expensive CD players etc, coming out on a freezing cold morning to a car with windows fully defrosted and driving off with an already warm engine would be bliss. Gerry.

There's a pre-heater/pump available for Land Rovers which plumbs into the cooling system and runs from a timer on the mains. So the engine is fully warm when you get in. Only thing to remember is to unplug from the wall.

I seem to recall Mercs used to have (still do?) something similar....

You can get it as an option on a few diesel cars. The old Rover 75 diesel used to have it, of all things!

I was talking to a Russian friend last night (great party - Russian Christmas this weekend ) and he told me that when winter temperatures drop to -30 degrees and below the only way they can start their cars is to light a fire under them . Now I have heard of this before, but I thought it was confined to tanks and other military vehicles. Apparently not.

At the Elefantentreffen friends have told me it is common practice to light a small camping stove under motocycle engines to warm them up. Never been myself - too bl**dy cold There are some good photos at http://www.motoblog.it/galleria/elefantentreffen-2010-ritorno

My Range Rover L322 diesels have had parking heaters ...so when you get up on a cold morning ...look out the bedroom ..if looks cold press the remote and within 30 mins -nice and toasty !
Also have one fitted in the back of my defender 90 ..but has to be programmed on a timer ...getting into a defrosted 90 is even better ...normally your trying to prise open the door with a shovel because they are frozen shut !!

I have a Webasto diesel preheater in the 90 - wonderful on those frozen mornings - particularly as I need to replace the glowplugs at present Unfortunately, by the time I've done 5 miles up the M5, the interior is pretty cold again, but at least the fresh air is welcome
