Hi, I'm new to the forum, I own a plus 8, 2001 3.9l, bought last Sept, and have driven some 500 enjoyable miles in it so far, have had the not uncommon stop light switch failure, but other than that the car is behaving very well.
One thing that does bother me however is the gruff noise from the engine when starting from cold, and its not just the tappets rattling prior to the hydraulics taking up the slack. The Morgan dealer says it's just a characteristic of this engine, once the engine has warmed up the noise seems to dis appear. The car was stored for some 4- years prior to me buying it, and I wondered if there could be an issue with the cat's has anyone come across this with the plus8, hoping the above makes sense.

Any more info on the noise?

Is it a top end rattle?

What's the mileage on the engine?

To add to the noise description it's like a rumble type noise, but as mentioned earlier seems to smooth out when engine is up to temperature so to me is not really an engine wear issue.

The Rover V8 is susceptible to main bearing rumble. When I had this engine in an MGB, I always did the first churn of the starter without choke, just to prime the oil feed. If I didn't do this it would rumble from the bottom end for a few seconds.

My 3.9 +8 of similar age also rumbled and also occasional high pitch squeal from top end scared. This was always after standing for 2+ weeks in garage or first start up from cold after a long (100m+) hot journey. Seemed to be lack of oil in the first 3/4 seconds then all was ok. Regular oil changes ensured that at least the best oil was being used and I lived with it. drive
