David,
VRT is payable on the registration of a car whether new or secondhand -- granted it does decline depending on the age of the car, but it is a real imposition!!!!

cheapness rules ("Geiz ist Geil", I can't translate this arr ) but where will we go for serving our cars, when all the established shops has gone and the cheap importers survived ("I will sell you the car as cheap as possible, but when you have a problem, you have real a problem ...")

Thank you for this information! Might be useful in the future!

Fortunately I'll be there by end of May to hire a Morgan. I'll discuss this with them!

Because of this my first choice will be the local dealer but not at any price ...

Don't complain about VAT on new vehicles unless you live in Demark. They have to pay 180% scared

It really is time that VAT was made equal all across Europe, and not only on vehicles. Every time something is sold on the internet and supplied from a low tax country it is taking funds for local services that then have to be covered by higher local taxes soapbox

That is true Brian but the factory charges for this service, you still have to organise temporary insurance, and you still have to organise your own registration and pay local taxes when you get it home (you are exempt from VAT in the UK but you can not avoid it in your home state). Fortunately for us the rules in Italy allow you to pay the tax, get the plates and insurance before going to pick up the car. This saved us quite a bit of cash.

Wow - look at these punitive anti car taxes in Europe - I think there would be poll tax like riots if these were brought into the UK.

Who voted for these anti car politicians?

Big Mogs would be dead.

Ireland

Vehicle registration tax or VRT is a tax that must be paid in Ireland when registering a motor vehicle.

VRT is calculated as a percentage of the open market selling price (OMSP) of the vehicle. The OMSP is the "expected retail price" and includes all taxes (Including VAT) p

A new system was introduced with effect from the 1st July 2008. This system applies to new vehicles registered from this date as well as second hand vehicles imported after this date. Commercial Vehicles remain unaffected.
Band CO2 Emissions VRT Rate
A 0 – 120g 14% of OMSP
B 121 – 140g 16% of OMSP
C 141 – 155g 20% of OMSP
D 156 – 170g 24% of OMSP
E 171 – 190g 28% of OMSP
F 191 – 225g 32% of OMSP
G 226g and over 36% of OMSP

Criticisms

Critics of VRT claim that it is effectively a continuation of the excise duty (which was applicable to vehicles in Ireland prior to 1992) and as such is illegal under European union law. It should also be noted that as it is calculated on the selling price of a vehicle, inclusive of VAT, so is in effect a double taxation. Along with complaints about the very high rate of tax, critics maintain the tax is ineffective in one of its stated aims the reduction of pollution from vehicles because while it may limit the number of vehicles on the road (by making new cars less affordable), it provides a disincentive for owners of older (more polluting) vehicles to replace their cars. As the tax is on vehicle ownership rather than usage there is little incentive for those who do manage to buy a car to ever consider using less polluting methods of transport.
Other countries

Similar taxes are in place are the Netherlands which has the BPM (Belasting Personenauto’s Motorrijwielen) tax. This tax is 45% of the selling price of the car and gives a discount or punishment based on the CO2 emission.

Denmark has the heaviest vehicle tax in Europe (the second heaviest in the world after Singapore). The tax is 105% of the first €8000,- (ca.) and 180% of the rest. The tax is calculatet after the VAT (25%), so it's also double taxing! [2]
Also other european countries have registration tax, like: Austria, Portugal, Greece, Norway (heavy, similar to Denmark), Iceland,...

....and mankind contributes a fraction of 1% to global CO2. The UK would be hardly measurable in fact. China, the USA and India being bigger contributors, volcanoes, oceans and cattle being the biggest.

But it's an easy way to take cash from us to spend on more government.

Cynical?

Moi?

The problem with cattle cis methane. Methane is a more potent greenhouse gas. Growing rice in paddy field also contributes to methane increases.
Oceans absorb Co2 they don't produce it as CO2 is soluble in water and phytoplankton absorb CO2 during photosynthesis and emit less CO2 by respiration.
Luckily Morgans have a very low life time CO2 output!
Interestingly in EVO magazine the editor was saying that tax increases on petrol have reduced car usage so much and because people are buying more low vehicle duty cars that the net tax take to HMG has gone down!

Car tax in DK never ceases to amaze me. Can you imagine 180%? As an example, the base price of the new Golf is €28k over there... which is probably a stripped out car with no radio and no options, to keep the taxable value down... They have to get the revenue to fund their welfare state from somewhere though. DK consistently comes out as one of the best places to be born. You would have to be a serious car enthusiast to drive a M3W over there (do we have any?).

Don't get me started on the CO2 discussion... I think Neilda and I have the same opinion. The only benefit I can see is that CO2 and fuel economy are directly related, so any policy which pushes for lower CO2 is hopefully reducing overall fuel consumption (plus pushing car makers to advance their technology) and therefore making our reserves last longer
