I have a 1.8l zetec 4/4 (2001) Started the car. Drove it out of garage. Ticking over nicely then it died. Starter motor turns but not even a little cough ! Thinking electrics or fuel - any suggestions ?

Fuel pump relay seems to be a favourite

Whip a plug out then turn it over with the plug resting against the block to see if it's sparking. If it is then take the fuel line off at the injectors and turn it over (briefly!) to see if it's pumping fuel. Take it from there.

It's ok whipping out a plug on an earlier engine but I'd take care doing it with a modern engine like the Zetec, I recall reading somewhere that you can damage the electronics. Checking the fuel delivery as mentioned is what I'd do.

Checked all the fuses? Not sure if there's a separate fuse for the pump.

I would first check the fuel pump relay, as already stated.
The two relays that seem to sometimes cause problems on the Zetecs are the fuel pump and the cooling fan; not sure why?
I carry a spare relay with me, (having had the cooling fan fail in the past). The relays are interchangeable.

Just another (random?) thought - is there a fuel cut off somewhere in this setup?

There is a black button on the passenger side bulkhead which is an inertia switch & stops the fuel in case of an accident.
Try pressing it to be sure.
I would turn the ignition on & listen for the pump.
Check the electric cut off switch behind the drivers seat, mine on my +4 can move slightly so there is power but the pump doesn't run.

Thanks every one for your comments. I checked all the fuses and no problem there. I did remove a plug and there does not seem to be a spark. I think it may mean a trio to the Ford garage for a plug in to the diagnostics. Forest.
