You should insist on a new back panel...it was their fault and no way should it have passed final inspection.

How very frustrating for you.
Is the back panel replaceable without major drama - or is it a major job?

Replacing the back panel is a big job - in fact, I think it would mean a new body, as the back panel is attached and can't be seperated. Morgan are taking the car back and are apparently confident they can make it perfect. If not, they will have to make a new body for me, although Richard Thorne think that something this drastic is unlikely to be required. I will look at the finished product with the eyes of a hawk - it needs to be perfect. After all, the car is hardly cheap.
Morgan have said they are not happy with it - so how did it leave the factory? I guess they were hoping I would just accept it?

Hmmm. Not impressed with that, I have to say. Metalworkers amongst us will know if it can be fixed.... I suspect it can. I've had bodywork done before and it can be filled/riveted, sanded, painted etc.
I hate stuff going wrong at the last minute - really frustrating.
On the upside (sort of) is that spring hasn't fully sprung - I was near Goodwood today and the snow is properly deep.
Keep us posted.

Keep us posted. It is frustrating. But as you say, it's damn freezing now and not quite Morgan weather. John at Richard Thorne thinks the delay will only be a few days or so, so not a big deal. To be honest, if the delay was a month, I would go with it so long as the car is perfect at the end.

The back panel is one panel back to just above the mid point of the top of the rear wheel arch so the front part of the body, sills, scuttle etc would not need to be replaced surely.
It'll be interesting to see what they do...perhaps a bit of welding up the holes.

It'll be interesting to see what they do...perhaps a bit of welding up the holes. That’s good - so at least it would not need a complete new body. I have been told they are going to spot weld the holes, smooth it down and respray. Aluminium is a tricky metal to weld though - too hot and it warps. If they get it right then it should be perfect.

They do alloy welding at the factory and pretty well too. The bonnet scoop on the SuperSports/Baby Doll is welded into the bonnet and thats a very neat job.

Welding up a couple of small holes and then preparing and painting the panel will be quite straightforward. A lot of welds on this body and you can't see them.  Disappointing that they let the car go out like that in the first place though. Good - so hopefully it won’t be a problem to rectify. But it is very disappointing that they let it go out like that - I really don’t know what they were thinking.
