Been pondering this all day

As plenty have said, ethanol absorbs water. Calling it hydro, or hygro is really just nitpicking. So the answer to the second question is wrong although you can quibble and say the ethanol doesn't cause corrosion, but the water it absorbs does. So dry fuel is ok, but give it a few days and it won't be dry.

Got my doubts the advice to store a car with a full fuel tank is right as well. Car tanks breathe (and need to) so the fuel will absorb atmospheric water. So the more fuel it contains, the more water it can absorb. Plus, the best way to start a stored car is to sling in some fresh fuel from a sealed can - but you'll not be doing that if the tank is full already.

I agree that that in this definition, it is 'hygro'. My point was merely that anything 'hydro' is normally water related.

I worked on the RN Hydrographic vessel Hydra back in the day providing the high accuracy navaids necessary to enable them to correct the Admiralty charts so am fully aware of the definition of Hydra and it's many derivatives even if it is viewed by some as nitpicking being right is no crime, not caring less is.

There's always another game ahead I agree.

It is a most interesting and very timely for me as on Thursday I visited someone who is a little serious with Landrovers S1&2's 5 (in immaculate condition) at last count plus a very early Rangerover. Various other interesting classics. He mentioned the upcoming Ethanol concerns for classic owners and the fact that unless they were club members they could well be unaware of the advise to use Super Unleaded.

That would be "... advice to use Super Unleaded" I suppose?

After years and years of laying up my MG's I concluded that a full tank was the best fix, limiting the amount of air in contact with the fuel. The only time I had fuel go off was when I left a couple of gallons in the tank, and it really did go off in a big way. The smell was strange, the car wouldn't start and the fuel lines were coated with a green waxy deposit. For the last few years of MG motoring I added fuel preserver to the full tank.
The other effect was that condensation gathered at the lowest point - water being heavier than petrol, and the tank corroded around the pick up and along the leading edge of the tank - the lowest points. Everywhere else in the tank was pristine - viewed with a torch through the sender hole.
