Wow! That was one hell of a wayward golf stroke

You are sooo right - I had a serious health scare 6 weeks ago.

Am ok - but it really made me think about the future and how tenuous our hold on life really is. confused2

Soo if there is something you want to do - or a life u want to lead - you should not put it off...I do not wish to be morbid ...but we do not know what lurkes around the next corner. cheers

Graham,

If you can afford it, then get out when you can. After retiring at 50 and having over 16 years of retirement ( couple of stress less jobs during that time ) it's has been very worthwhile. Not sure how I had time for work, and I don't miss it at all.

Ditto..... I did the same. Not really voluntary on my part, I was given an option of compulsory redundancy, working full time in London ( that team went later!) or taking a voluntary redundancy package which gave me an early retirement option. Looking back I'm glad I took the latter.

Thanks Ian,
I could do it, if I gave up the Morgan and the daily motor, but I don't want to do that (particularly the Mog!!). During the last round (you're aware of the group I work for at a guess) we had 5 applicants from this building - none of which were passed for EOW. All five have applied again for this round. I'm sure ES is going to continue with this for a while yet, although the latest was suddenly shortened, but due to a failure in the email system I and many others here didn't get that message until 2 weeks after it had been sent - nearly 2 weeks after the cut-off date.

Thanks to everyone else too. But, 22k including 3 months pay in lieue of notice doesn't go very far. Added to what I have saved up I still would not get anywhere near drawing a pension. Might get a lot closer if I was single, mind laugh2 swmbo shocked2

Cheers,

Graham, I am also ES. My understanding is that EoW (expression of Wish) will continue throughout the fiscal year. I do not have the years of service to make it worthwhile plus the court order to pay my ex on 1st of month!!!!!! Two f our German colleagues got out last year and set themselves up as independents and work when they want to top up. Is this something you could do?

Hi Pete,
I need it to go on for another 18 months to make 15 years. I could probably just scrape through then. Before I came here, I was running a small PC maintenance/repair one man band, but even then people were saying it wasn't worth repairing computers or many peripherals and they would just go out and buy a replacement...
I keep looking around at alternatives, getting away from IT, but so far have not found anything I really would enjoy (and that's a big part of it!).

Cheers,

You know and love Morgans... anything there?

I am also aware of at least 4 former IT staff who are either fish and chip shop owners or publicans and hoteliers......

I got a shock when I walked into a pub a long way away from my home turf to be greeted by name.... Somebody I worked with in UCSL many many many moons before.

Anyway good luck with your thinking and meanwhile back to the salt mine for me

cheers

3 servers on the go here at the mo. Can't do much until the diags have finished running.

Love Morgans... Yes. I keep thinking along those lines, but not sure where my talents would lie - not really au fait with the latest generations.
Interesting you mention some of those others - there is a little local brewery in Greenfield, quite close to my Bro-in-Law and one of the chaps running that is ex-IT...

Cheers,
