Wonder if I get to the 'estate' with my 90?

It sounds like plenty of outside visits and maybe 40p per mile for the pleasure of driving the 90 .

Having cut the corporate umbilical 10 years ago - I can tell you my experience.

We do not realise how many very valuable transferable skills/strengths/experience we have - until we count them - or simply apply them elsewhere.

There are a myriad of low stress well paid jobs/self employed chances out there - if you look,listen and test the market.

I know - thats what i did - and I have spent those 10 years in my highly lucrative very low stress business. I am my own boss - simply brilliant!!

I clean carpets! Ok it took me a while to come to terms with this radical change - BUT what a 10 years its been.

Glad it's working out for you.
A good friend of mine took a similar route. Highly qualified, but working in a high stress job for someone who he didn't get on with.
He now operates a franchised minor body repair business.
I have never seen him happier and he makes a very decent living.

I did 5 1/2 years looking after the IT at a local comprehensive school. I certainly would not have called it hard work and the pay was quite good. I was only meant to do it for 6 months but had too much fun and it just rolled on. My skills were not in computers and servers but I soon learnt, so you would be surprised what is out there and its a lot less stressful.

I also did, and still do a little, technology consultancy in retirement, and did for the last 9 years, all on request .

Some would say that I was mad when I returned to a company for 3 years part time where I had once been a Divisional MD, to help out in a technical role of the most basic hands on work .

Not being of the 'Do you know who I am/was' brigade, I did not have a problem and I am sure the Tax Man enjoyed the extra takings .

It's a tough one. One of my mates has just taken voluntary redundancy from a company he's been with for thirty years; it wasn't the redundancy that hurt, but the fact that the pension fund has been put into liquidation too, so the gold plated final salary pension that kept him there for so long has gone up in smoke.

My dad took early redundancy when IBM first offered it (and the terms were very generous). His colleagues who stayed all ended up getting the heave ho on the bare minimum. He was bored within 3 months, so applied to do some voluntary support work for MIND. When they asked him why he thought an ex submariner turned computer company executive could help the mentally ill he told them they obviously hadn't met many sailors. He then passed his city and guilds in social work and was taken on by Hampshire council as a social worker. He worked at that until some busybody in HR worked out he was 77 years old and they made him retire. He then took up prison visiting (but only on a voluntary basis).

I hesitate to offer any advice as I've been self employed for practically all of my working life (and am therefore probably unemployable). Some say I've just spent the last 18 years up the pub....I just hope that if you do end up taking the plunge that you find something interesting and fulfilling that helps to keep the wolf from the door.

A friend of mine was a semi-professional Ice Hockey player - fit as a fiddle having played for several Scottish and English teams at National league level. He was training the youngsters at out local rink one evening when he keeled over on the ice with a massive heart attack at age 42. Huge shock to everybody to think it could happen to someone with his level of fitness.

His wife happens to be my grand-daughter's teaching assistant and at a memorial game my grand-daughter presented her with one of his game-worn shirts I had with his name and number on the back. Brought a tear to the eye!

Life's too short? Absolutely!

When I had all my pensions OK, I quit from the Ted Bates advertising Company and run my own communication and management consultant business for twenty years. Worked in projects with old colleagues who also started their own businesses. Have never felt better. Did not earn the money I did as a employee but had more fun and had time for my cars and my golf. It´s not all about money, is it?
