Hello There,
There seems to be different schools of thought on this, I have have used Lithium grease on starters and it seems to help function as surprisingly very little muck gets into that area of the bell- housing.

Hi Dave earlier cars like this 1964 have starters with separate Solenoid, not a pre- engaged unit, I had a look at the ring gear it looks ok
My mind is getting boggled rapidly with this!

I can't think of any reason why you're getting through starter motors - other than as already suggested, it was a poor batch.

they sent out a RAC-410
it was the wrong one so they picked it up with my original and built a one to match RAC-110A high torque . When it starts up it gives a Whizz sound .
It cost me in total £158-63.
Mathew is the chap in charge .

Just started it the other day after a month and it started first time .

Agreed - dirt and clutch plate dust sticks to the grease and makes the problem worse. But I remember a squirt of WD40 on the starter bendix of my Triumph Vitesse worked wonders when I had a similar problem years ago. I think powdered graphite or MoS2 was the recommended lubricant.

That it is OK on the first crank, but not the second reminds me of a problem I had years ago with a rebuilt starter. The rebuilder used a wire size that was too small in the armature, and as a result, when the starter was bone cold it would crank OK for a few seconds until the resistance rose in the windings, after that it would not develop enough power to crank. This also caused the drive pinion to remain engaged.
