Hello all again,
Further to my previous posting and the advice given, I have checked the battery and ring gear, both ok. Since then I have tried it with fully charged batteries with the same result, at the first crank everything turns over ok fuel pump lifts fuel etc. On second crank, which used to fire it up, the bendix is jamming in. I have taken the starter out 3 times and checked and greased the gear etc to no avail, it jams again on trying to turn it over. Power seems to be getting down from the solenoid to the starter ok. When the starter is stuck and you turn the ignition there is a loud click from the starter and you have to remove it from the engine to free it as rocking the car and tapping with blunt instrument does not free it. Any clues out there? if I pull any more hair out I'll be bald. HEEEEELLLLP!

Starter motor knackered?
Have you tried bump starting the car (bump not jump)?

Hello there,
it will start if pushed or tow started, this is the 2nd replacement starter fitted, initially during work by garage it was replaced and when 1st one went belly up they fitted a 2nd one which worked for a little while now it's acting up

Rocking and tapping pre engaged starters is unlikely to work. I wonder if there's something wrong with the ring gear.

Source of the replacement starter motors? New or reconditioned? We had a batch of replacment starters for the Prescott land Rover all from the same source. All did exactly as yours after a few weeks (OK not pre-engaged versions). Turned out they were cheap Britpart imports from China - couldn't cope. If you are going to change the starter again get one of the geared Hi-Torque variety. Not cheap, but will probably last the life of the vehicle... And have a battery shop do a load test on your battery - before replacing the starter again...  Good luck!

If you are going to go for another s/motor may be worth spending a few extra £ and going for a PowerLite it takes a lot less juice out of the battery . May be wise to check your earth strap or fit a new one

Did you check the connections from the battery to earth and then from the battery to the starter motor one by one?

I don't mind being shot down for this, here goes, I just seem to remember being advised not to grease the bendix on a starter motor.

Hi Graham,
I had the battery tested and it was perfect under load and recovery. The new starter has a Lucas label LRS100 on it.
Where would we get one of the other type and any ideas on costs?

I haven't heard of power-lite where can they be sourced from?
Earth straps etc all checked, cleaned and tightened.
