Is it me, or do successful people sometimes forget their roots?
The Don Valley stadium is to close because Sheffield City Council needs to save £700,000 in running it; Jess Ennis, who has worked incredibly hard since the age of 10, training at DVS, is now enjoying the financial rewards of her dedication and success. Rag tops report Ms Ennis as being likely to earn £3.5m in sponsorship by summer 2013.
Now £3.5m is a LOT of money in a year. Whilst SCC plan to "redevelop" a nearby derelict track (erm, with the £700k they save from DVS???), if I were in Jess's {running} shoes, I would be tempted to say to SCC "here you are boys & girls, £700k to keep Don Valley open UNTIL you have redeveloped the new site". Would leave her with £2.8m (less a bit o' tax) to spend, should get her through next winter I'd have thought?
And they might just name the "new" stadium the Jess Ennis Stadium in gratitude?
Just a thought, but I do despair when £££ clouds rational thinking.

With you on this one, JW - too many of the "running-in-circles-and-falling-over" brigade ignore the fact that it was public money that got them where they are, then get big spionsorship deals and scream like stuck pigs when the funding is threatened There really needs to be a 'give-back' system in place - perhaps we could move into their spare bedrooms?

Here's a cast iron guarantee, Chris : when I get sponsored more than £1m, I'll give 30% away !
That includes any big lottery win (hospital incubators top of list).
My point, as summed up by Mike, is that when you are suddenly given riches beyond your wildest dreams, and you are thus in a position to help out those who have given you a leg up in the first place, then use a bit of common. And be generous!

Exactly my thoughts, and no doubt there could be a tax advantage in there somewhere.

She'll pay 50% tax on most of this so that'll leave £1.75 so the time she's given over the £700k that'll leave £1 million. Lets differentiate sponsorship from cash, so that'll be the value of the car she's driving for three years, not the cash, cloths support etc etc etc. So I don't think she'll end up being any better off then before if she gives up her cash. Route cause of the problem isn't what she has done it's why do the council need to save £700k

So that's £1.75 million in tax she pays which could either pay for one MEP for a year or could be spent on saving Don Valley with a million in change.

Please tell me the £1.75m for one MEP is an ironic/sarcastic comment and not our true loaded cost for them. I don't think I could stand it.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Err, it will probably cost more than £700k just to fill the poholes in Sheffield's roads...
