Is there any truth to the adage that Morgans don't depreciate?
Could someone realistically buy a new 4/4 today and sell it for a very similar price 5 years down the line?

Yes.
(At least in the present climate).

my 4/4 is worth more now than when new (1989), and more than it was worth in 2006.

I bought my car when it was 2 years old, it is now 10 years old and depreciation has been negligible.

I think people are being less than transparent here, at the end of 2011 there were many unsold Morgans at dealers and prices were starting to drop a bit on the classics. I can start to see this happen slightly again looking at certain dealers stocks but it is still winter!

Then as the 3 wheeler became certified for sale in various countries, the factory could cut back to an extent on classic production to put priority on 3 wheeler production and to an extent on Plus 8 production which I assume will soon satisfy the early demand for the product.

Looking at the budget today we are in for some more years of downturn and apart from the 3 wheeler, I have the feeling that if you want a classic by all means buy one but do not confuse yourself between a wonderful lifestyle product and the effect on the price of these items in a high unemployment, low growth economy.

There is no reason to expect the classic range to have the low deprecation unless the factory can keep home market sales much lower and that would only be a result of higher exports to China, India and South America and very high three wheeler sales.

It could happen but don't bet on it.

Like most things in life, it's surely a question of supply and demand. I paid £40.000 for my +4 in 2011 and a similar model today would be around £43.000/£44.00.
However, dealers whilst selling at around £35.000/£36.000 would probably only go to £30.000 for p/x and less for outright purchase so although Moggies retain a good percentage of value compared to most other vehicles you should really only buy one for it's pleasure value which is priceless!!!

I looked at a new plus 4, a new Boxter, a three year old Boxter and three year old MX5 and a new MX5 all with a loss of Interest of 3% pa.

The only car that would compare with the Morgan re lost of capital and interest over 6 years or so was a three year old MX5 as they lose more than 50% of their value if you get someone who needs to get rid of it and is not trading it in for a new MX5 via Mazda.

As I have said buy one if you want one but Mike if you are so sure about them making money why do you not buy three of them and make three times as much.

I agree with Mike, a Morgan any spec will hold its valve providing it is looked after correctly. I spent 30 years in the Motor Trade working for two major Japanese manufacturers and am fully aware of deprecation on motor cars. The first thing all cars loose is the Vat of the purchase price on driving off the forecourt, but there after it depends on the model and spec.
Buy a good spec'd and good colour Morgan and it will hold its value given time.
I have a Plus 8 bought in 2003 new and it is now worth 5k more than when I bought it but it is loved.
