Welcome to TM Allen smile

" It cost roughly a gallon of gasoline to produce a gallon of ethanol here. "

How does that work out?

I'm pretty sceptical about the Eco movement generally.....there is a need to reduce our need on fossil fuels but the motives of many of those those who push "green" alternatives are generally to do with creaming off government subsidies. The governments don't help by setting unrealistic targets that then force such things as E10 fuel being introduced without proper research or consultation.

I'll get off my soapbox now!

As far as I know, the true greens do not approve of ethanol in fuel, but the politicians use the environment as an excuse to foist this on us.

And increase our taxes Martyn!! shocked2 grin2

Allen, welcome to TM, keep those posts coming, it's good to read some fresh air coming across the water...

Unfortunately, EU seems to accept anything on these lines that become the norm in the USA - it started long before catalytic convertors.

Sorry to bump an old thread - but I was reading about the 3.7 engine and thought this might be of interest to those who have them:

"Ford also worked outside the engine to make the package a better fit for the Mustang. The powertrain ECU has been upgraded with a very aggressive deceleration cylinder shutoff for fuel economy, coupled with very rapid tip-in for street performance. On the flip side, the ECU has been reprogrammed with adaptive-knock spark control. If the two knock sensors embedded in the cylinder block don't hear knocking, the ECU will keep advancing the spark until it does.

What this means in performance terms is that, if the owner uses premium or race gas on weekends, the engine should make considerably more power and torque than the numbers quoted here, which are the product of standard SAE dynamometer laboratory testing procedures and not real-world driving."

I have just got the Thames Valley Mog mag & there is an article on E10 fuel. BP claim it doesn't cause corrosion & is in fact better that E5. It also suggests if you have used E5 there is no risk from E10.

Mind you Mr BP also says unleaded doesn't cause valve seat recession.

He does point out that cheap fuel may be cross contaminated as the road tankers aren't dedicated to one fuel e.g. diesel in petrol. I can confirm that can occur with solvents for ink so I see his point there

If you have a look for the source of the information in that article you may see some familiar names. innocent

If it is the same BP response published here, much of it is sharp wording.

Ethanol in itself does not corrode steel, that is true, but it is a water attractant, and if the fuel sees enough water, the fuel undergoes separation as water is insoluble in petrol, but soluble in ethanol. This water/ethanol mixture then sinks to the bottom of the tank and the water content causes corrosion in the bottom of steel tanks etc.

So although the ethanol itself doesn't directly cause corrosion, it causes the conditions that can.

Yep now I look it is the same one.
Martyn it is carefully worded around water & ethanol being miscible & clearly they can separate in the right conditions and as you say water can sink to the bottom of the tank

Possibly a reason then to use the car more, keep the fuel mobile and top it up with fresh fuel more often smile
