What is high mileage? I've had 2 V8's past 100,000 miles with no issues, I currently have 2 V4 motorbikes, one 4 years old one 7 years old, both with over 90,000 miles. Only issues with the bikes is tyres and a new clutch on each.

I've had 3 suzuki cappuccino's, one I sold with 104,000 on it and then the new owner used it as an every day commute and soon got it up over 150,000 miles. This is a 3 cylinder 657cc turbo car. Only problem with the suzi's was rust and clutches.

Surely reliability on a high mileage car and "high mileage" in terms of depreciation are seperate issues?

Reliablity with the Aero 8 and its BMW V8 heart should not be of concern as long as it is serviced and maintained correctly. I agree that 100,000+ miles on a modern V8 (or any modern engine for that matter) is generally going to be trouble free (I've personally found the electronics of these engines are more problematic than the engines themselves - but that is another thread (overly technical cars)!

In terms of depreciation, I believe the motor industry (dealers, Glasses Guide, leasing companies, the AA, etc) regard 12,500 miles as the annual average mileage for a car. However, it is obvious that different car makers take differing views on this - for instance if you put 12,500 miles on a Ferrari in 1 year, you won't get guide price come trade-in time. As a high mileage Aero 8 owner (and seller), I think Brian may be the best to comment on whether Morgan dealers believe 12,500 miles or more effect the depreciated value of the car. My guess is they, like many other brand dealers, would mark the value of the car down when compared to a car with 6,000 miles.

Like you said Simon, it is the perception of 'high mileage' that drives the depreciation as an Aero must be more than capable of doing 100k miles without any major running-gear issues.

However, having sold my two previous Aero's at 15,500 miles and 14,500 miles, both mileages being done in fairly short periods of ownership, there is little doubt that 'Shooter' will take a pretty hard hit on depreciation with 20,000 miles on a circa 2-year old Aero 8. I am not saying that this is right, but I am sure that will be the reality.

Maybe now that Cereal has studied the topic in depth, and has a formula reflecting his findings, he can give Shooter an approximate value of his car today, if he lets him have the current mileage. From this it shoyld be possible to extrapolate the value at this time next year with 20,000 miles on it.
