I'm looking for opinions on tyres for a recent model ('05) 4/4 with the standard 5x15” wire wheels.

Firestone F560 seem to be the easiest to obtain locally in the nominally correct size, which is 165/80x15 T. They come with a recommendation from my tyre dealer, who understands wire wheels and races a TVR.

For the narrow wheel I would always recommend Avon CR6ZZ. This is a fully road legal historic rally tyre. Very good in both wet and dry conditions and wear rate is not bad at all given the light weight and low general miles a Mog does.

Hi

mogtalk had a discussion on this a little while ago, it turns out. The F560 is highly thought of, and also gets a good review in the tests of the Morgan Sport Vauxhall VVTI conversion 4/4 which is running on them.

the Avon CR6ZZ is £110 per tyre, more than twice the cost.

It's F560s for me. I'll let you know how they work out.

I can now report that the Firestone 165/15 F560s are excellent. At 18psi they have a bit more grip than the Contis they replaced, yet the steering remains reasonably light.

The MWS stainless wires are beautiful high quality items and according to my tyre guy were very easy to balance (they are tubeless, silicone sealed BTW) which is borne out by lack of vibration at 80mph indicated.

I live on private road on a hill with speed bumps. My +4 would bottom out on all of them at 18 psi I always run at 26 psi.

The factory manual for the 4/4 states 18 psi for 165/80x15 tyres. My dealer (Berrybrook) said 18-20psi. So 18 psi is what I have inflated them to - cold of course.

The manual does say 22 psi for 195 tyres (presumably that would be wider section on the +4).

I have tried 24 psi and found the steering rather light. I find my suspension reasonably compliant and well-damped, and it doesn't bottom out very often even on rough moors roads.

Surely over-inflated tyres would give less grip?

My car however is only 3 years and 3500 miles old - perhaps you are using higher pressures to compensate for worn suspension?

...also here in the webpage relating to the Morgan Sport GM engine upgrade for older trad Morgans:

"A brief pre-test check was carried out and I noted new wheels and tyres (Firestone F560) and also brake reaction bars had been fitted during the conversion from CVH to GM 1800cc VVTi motor. I noted also tyre pressures of 26/27 psig which, with Kevin's immediate agreement, I reduced to 19 psig (his preferred figure, mine is 18 psig.)"
