I'm interested by the fact that most cars of that era seem to have the steering wheel on the right. I guess in the days before heavy traffic it really didn't make much difference one way or the other. I saw a Hispano Suiza limousine in St Germain en Laye last week, one of those ones where the chauffeur's compartment is open so he can sit in the rain. Also RHD.

Yes several french cars of that era were RHD, especially those of the manufacturers of luxury car, Delahaye, Delage, Talbot, Hispano, Salmson for exemple. For these makes nearly all cars were RHD in the 20's and 30's.

Also Italian luxury cars favoured RHD.
If the car is RHD and you drive on the right, the chauffeur is well placed to open the passenger door on the pavement side.
The sports car case is that many Alpine passes have sheer drops, often unfenced, they frequently weren't surfaced before WW2 and consequently, the driver having a good view of the road edge was important!
