I enjoyed your write up a lot. I can share all the positive social aspects you have experienced with your new Mog, always very friendly resonances and especially little childs are very addicted to a Mog. They behave so excited as if a Mog is an incarnation of what men has stored in his genes since thousands of years how a propper car should look like. (BTW young kids triggered by the Mog usually have young moms around them, who (not always but very often are somehow very attractive to an 54y old bloke like me) And the situation is funny, the moms are proud about the active behave of their excited young kids and in this moment the moms allow themselves to see the Mog with a little less self controlled view - and might start to flirt.

Great fun to read your experiences with Porsches - and how strict the hierarchies are within the range...I'm curious about how the people will react on a 1982 3.0 SC Targa in guards red I will collect next Friday in Rotterdam (from California, my first Porsche ever).

unlikely the same reaction to a porker in the fatherland as here. I guess here in the uk, a lot of them are owned by people who want a badge but cant afford the prancing horse. Its not rational or even fair, but porkers invite the sort of reaction that ferrari, lambo or aston never get.Or Morgan or Lotus for that matter


Even dafter is the way that people look down on the boxter, undoubtedly a better design than the 911 .

I really like the Cayman; I've never driven one, but have been a passenger and was hugely impressed.

Most of the mags rate the handling of them higher than the 911.

Only my point of you - and perhaps more imagination than reality:
In the hierarchy of Porsche sports models as well as in the social perception, the 911 is on top (we don´t talk Panamera or Cayenne).
We have a lot of typical folks like dentists, upper level managers, lawyers etc. who would not buy a Boxter or Cayman at least when they are 50+, and even if they would admit that the middle engine concept could be much easier to drive (for them).

Most of this people look like they CAN afford the "prancing horse". But in the same time, most of them don´t look as if they would make any more usage with their 911 than to show themselves in an "adequate" vehicle.

(On the other hand you can see the real enthusiasts driving their GT3 RS with rollcage on Nürburgring, this folks, generally spoken can also afford it - and a lot of Brits and Swedish among them).

A car which could trigger the peoples phantasy that it is a pay by installments could be e.g. a huge AMG or any optically tuned BMW saloon

Nevertheless, if payed or not, over here a Porsche is THE symbol to arouse envy. A Ferrari, Lambo or Aston e.g. is too much an exotic and in every aspect too far away from most average perceptions.
And a Mog, as quoted, arises a lot of sympathy. BTW I have stopped to explain asking people that she is from 2011. They want her to be 50 years old and now, often they get want they want to hear.


Since the late eighties with the introduction of the 964/911, Porsche is working on to "soften" the car and to "domesticate" it. They have done a lot and with great success to make the 911 boring, fat and heavy (in my opinion) - and finally to keep it attractive for the above described target group.

But even this way going they cannot overcome the law of physics, only mask it a bit.

I never liked new Porsches and I have to admit that my view was not free of prejudices against car and driver. I even did not like the sound, but now, 30 years ahead I fall in a late love with the early air cooled breed.

I enjoyed my year with a Boxster '91 S - except for the worry of IMS failure (not suffered by the 911 as far as I know) and the thought of some idiot damaging it while it was sat on the driveway (too wide to reach the garage).
I'd like to try a Cayman (and maybe will at Silverstone Porsche one day), but that expensive engine failure still comes into the picture.

I am often inclined to let people believe it is a restored classic too. I tell them it is 2012 build and they respond "Oh! It is a replica then." Then you get stuck telling them the whole story and half the time they go away saying "Yes, just as I thought, a replica"

The 996 version of the 911 also had IMS problems! Fortunately the one I had escaped any problems.
