Very minor thought this morning, but a washer under the bolt head will distribute the load more evenly. It's not uncommon to find the underside of a bolt is not smooth so would cause points of high stress.

Of course, as there isn't much space, a washer might not fit, but even a cut down washer ought to be better than none.

The point about anti-tramp bars also makes sense. While you need to be a bit of a loony on the road to fully appreciate them, Woodstock was a far nicer car on the highway after all the competition modifications were carried out.

The picture of the one which has split vertically seems to support this theory. I might consider a Mulfab anti-tramp set up........

I agree with you Dave. The wind up acts in a direction where the damper mount has it's obvious limits (...or should it be 'limitations'?).

Martyn -
I'll be looking at a washer solution as I'd come to the same conclusion as you!

Brackets arrived today. I'll post comparative photos when I get time (next week). The new ones are as in the beefed up but cracked photo. Unfortunately I don't have time to fit them before Sunday and Devon. I'm tied up at work all day tomorrow, Saturday is Kent, so no spare time to play at all until next Thursday.
Sometimes things conspire to all come at the same time.........

PS: Part numbers at Rutters:

SUS76L - Rear shock absorber mounting LH cars with BTR axle.
SUS76R - Rear shock absorber mounting RH cars with BTR axle.

LH is £31.29 plus VAT
RH is £30.85 plus VAT

Just picked up this thread.
Words fail me....
Engineering of a quality that is beyond description. I can only assume the person who designed this was hired from BMC, not BMW.

The last time I owned a car with leaf springs the dampers connected to the clamps that connected the axle to the springs, not bodged to the drum back plate.

The answer is clear: custom titanium brackets. Shouldn't cost more than £200 each......

Is the basic problem here not a simple one? The same fittings are used for cars with anything from 115 to 370 bhp, and used for anything from pottering/ commuting to spirited road or competition.

The more powerful trads need a more suitable solution for the rear suspension. I doubt I'd break them in my 4/4.

The Rutherford kit, which was available long before the factory started fitting telescopics at the rear uses just that. You get a modified lower plate for the axle 'U' bolts. Never heard of any trouble with that and some pretty hairy competition Mogs had them.

And Martyn, the angle of the shocks was probably less with the Rutherford conversion and therefore more effective.
