It is a Union Flag or a "Jack" The 'PC' brigade have been trying to get us Brits to call it a Union Flag when on Land and Union Jack is OK when on the Sea. Being very very 'Old School' myself, It was always a 'Union Jack' in my Father's Navy Day's so that has always been good enough for me . The rest can go and hoist their own whatsits. After all, It was also the Submariners who rebelled and introduced use of the Jolly Roger or Skull & Crossbones as well when some old officer type said they all looked like a bunch of Pirates in their dirty white Sweaters and Unshaven appearance

That pic is Commander Christopher Louis Wreford - Brown DSO Royal Navy. HMS Conqueror after sinking the Belgrano. His father was one of my lecturers at BRNC Dartmouth. I served in the South Atlantic and Persian Gulf and it was insisted upon that we called it The Jack or Union Flag.
Hardly matters I guess, it is a great symbol. More importantly the colours do not run!

Quite right. The flag in question is the Union Flag. The flagstaff at the bow of a warship is called the Jackstaff, and the flag which is flown on it is therefore referred to as the Jack. This is not unique to the Royal Navy, it's also true on ships of the US Navy for example, who also call the flag flown there the Jack.

Interesting quote from The Flag Institute.
"It is often stated that the Union Flag should only be described as the Union Jack when flown in the bows of a warship, but this is a relatively recent idea. From early in its life the Admiralty itself frequently referred to the flag as the Union Jack, whatever its use, and in 1902 an Admiralty Circular announced that Their Lordships had decided that either name could be used officially. Such use was given Parliamentary approval in 1908 when it was stated that “the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag”. Cdr Bruce Nicolls OBE RN (Retd) "
I was brought up to call it the Union Jack...that was the common term and it annoys me when the PC brigade insist we call it the Union Flag. In the good old days it was probably described as a gay flag.......not now!

I thought my inability to post pics was going to get the most comments. But, in the US we still refer to the flag as the Union Jack. So I guess, long live the queen. I still can't post pics, any help will be appreciated.

Someone did do an idiots guide for attachments, which suited me.
You can use the photobucket route but the easiest is to click below this box the third button which says Switch to Full Reply Screen. File Manager below is then clicked. You choose the file from your computer and then attach the file.
