You might get three bottles laid down Peter, but four may be a squeeze, and it doesn't travel well. The vibration would upset it!

I was thinking of upright, with the bottom of the box on the same level as the bottom of the battery. A nice block of neoprene foam at the base... Oh, yes..the sort of wine we drink isn't bothered by vibration....

In the workshop was a Series 1 Roadster being rebuilt after a serious "off" ; new chassis and wings, bonnet, etc. So I was able to have a good look at the rear end from underneath and above, with no interior panels in the way. The rear 2" tube roll bar is exactly where I'd hoped to take space for a booze box: I'd not realized the battery sits under this bar. Yes, there is some space above the axle and Tim suggested that the tray can go as low as the underside of the rube each side of the diff. So that is about 4" down from the existing parcel shelf floor. I think a light wood and hardboard prototype will be needed to optimize the space.

Peter, I bought off ebay a van safety locker which, whilst it won't hold bottles, is like a large letterbox sized locking box. I made a suitable hole behind the driver's seat and fixed it in. It's like a very secure quite large glovebox. Of course, I have to tilt the seat forward to use it and it is hidden behind the carpet.
