Surprisingly, no one has mentioned Mike Bloomfield, any takers? Unfortunately no recording exists that I know of Fairport Convention's version of East West. We do however have a barely 18 year old Richard Thompson playing on French TV in 1968. Guitarist's tone is a strange thing, a combination of guitar, pickups, effects and amplification - but most of all it comes from their fingers. One of my Strats is set up exactly like Gilmour's red Strat, with EMG active pickups, but I still can't emulate his tone.
For the kind of blues Clapton plays, I would agree that the Lace Sensor pickups he uses are perhaps not what one would expect, but he seems to do all right. Stevie Ray of course used Texas Specials in his Strat, but what got him his tone are the 13 gauge strings he used - more like stair rods than guitar strings.
For my money, there has never been a finer blues player than Rory Gallagher, he did everything with a battered old 61 Strat with standard pickups. Chaps it appears I am not the only one on TM with GAS (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome) I have Strat Texas special but like you say to make it sound like SRV ... I can't and Ive checked the set up

Ah yes, GAS. Life is too short to run the risk of ending up with too few guitars :-)
My current count is up to 7, my favourite being a PRS 513, which when teamed with my Mesa Boogie amp, sounds just awesome.

Are some of you guys playing with friends in a band? I used to for decades but the last 20years no more. We had some nice constellations playing rock jazz, blues rock, we tried some jazz, at least the easier harmonics stuff. I would like to reactivate this great hobby playing in a band.

Not me. I jammed occasionally with a mate in Zurich when I worked there, but for the last few years I have just played at home for my own amusement, and have coaching sessions to improve my technique.

you made my calm Friday evening relaxing at home with this video. I guess this young talented, cool, sexy nice-tone pretty to fall in love with bass player wasn't even born when the original studio recording appeared in 1974. The original studio version was an eye opener to me regarding hifi sound, mostly because of the Rhodes flanging and vibrato sounds (which I miss on this live recording). Otherwise on this new video the drummer has kept the soul of the original drums playing the brushes and with such an excellent timing and tension overall.
BTW I read that Jeff was being off the wall when he saw the original LP cover showing him with a Les Paul but he was in love and play with his Strat at that time.

Superb and showing my ignorance hadn't heard of Tal Wilkenfeld before, don't think I've ever heard bass played like that.

The whole concert is on YouTube and worth a look... Tal is a great player and Vinnie Colaiuta a superb drummer - he rose to fame with Zappa, Corea and Hancock. He rivals Erskine, Gadd and Carlock for sensitive play. You're spot on, there's tension in his playing... It's quite something. Check out 'Nadia' on the same concert. ETA.
