My ones pop and fart on overrun and occasionally a loud detonation goes off which makes the grin even bigger.

So far they have made three children cry, all boys funny enough and all up north, well above the M25 anyway.

Yup, it will. Closed Loop systems can sometimes automatically adjust fuelling by as much +/-15-20%, which should be enough, but remember that 15-20% is against the target AFR's, ie: the mapped target values locked into the ECU. If the map is fundamentally weak, then that's still the Closed Loop's starting point. Ideally it might also need timing tweaks, but that's less likely.

When the pipes are finally fitted, I will have to find a dyno at an S&S specialist to have it checked. Just look back at our French colleague whose de-cat'd and early-piped (noisier) car dyno'd some 25bhp more than ours....

Krazy Horse have had an exhaust made for their demonstrator I imagine they'll have tested it on their dyno . I'll investigate when my comfort kit finally arrives for fitting .

I have a few questions and observations.

With the new fan cooling system, where does the exhaust side of the cooling fan vent? I also saw a video about the Top Gear guy doing the M3W drive and while it was raining he said that air was blowing into the foot well as did a lot of rain water. Are the foot wells not totally closed off from the outside or maybe open up to under the hood, sorry, bonnet?

As far as performance and the exhaust goes, just having pipes as long as these are cuts into the power a lot. I know guys that have Harleys with big tall chopper like straight pipes up and out the back and they lose lots of power. Just plain drag pipes do increase performance, but man are they loud. Drag pipes are in the 40” to 50” range.

My ’09 Harley has o2 sensors and do give some adjustment to the map, but no where enough to compensate for a more open exhaust system. I have a reprogrammed map in my ECM that lowers the air/fuel ratio a bit to help cool the motor and obviously adds some hp to the bike. My bike had a CAT in the header pipe, but it’s long gone now. I also ground down the welds on the baffles at the rear of my O.E.M. 4” diameter mufflers and removed the baffles. Inside there is a fiberglass packing around the baffles that help to absorb some of the noise. I then installed 2” baffles from Fullsac Performance in Phoenix AZ. They also sell TTS Master Tune tuning system. When my model CVO came out they dyno’d about a dozen of them with gutted CAT and their 2” baffles. When you buy their baffles and the TTS from them, they furnish you with their canned dyno proven map. My 110” CVO gets 47 mpg two up and has lots more get to it as well as a noticeable reduction in heat from the exhaust.

What I’m hearing from you guys is with the exhaust and possibly some freer breathing air cleaners, you really should retune the ECM and have it dyno’d. But at this time I’m not sure who would do that for such a limited number of M3W’s out there.

Here is Fullsac’s website: http://www.fullsac.com

The owner’s name is Steve. He works with the people that make the tuners and maybe he has some experience with the S&S wedge motor and can help you guys out.

On a side note, it sounds like you guys are having a blast with your M3W’s. I remember what it’s like to be this excited about a new toy.

Keep up all the great posts so I have more reading to keep me busy…

Thanks.

Dan, I think you need to get your order for a new Morgan in NOW. Don't wait - do it, now. It's not something you will ever regret. [OK it is just possible, but I know that you won't regret it, you are just such a petrol head].

Dan - what a very informative reply and I agree with PaulJ - JFBO, as we (sometimes) say over here!

Your point about Harley engines and pipes rings true with my view of just why the M3Ws are likely to respond well to improved flow. Big V-Twins make best power on short, open pipes - not the 8ft hugely baffled and CAT'd up monsters we have as stock. I'm all for a little more noise, but not shed loads more, hence my idea about a using a proper absorption silencer instead of the current design. In all likelihood, a different 'unlocked' ECU will be required to allow a mapping expert to do their magic and get the most out of the changes.

All very exciting, I must say.

The basic rule of thumb is short, open drag pipes allow higher horsepower very quickly, but tuned exhaust pulses from longer baffled systems allow for greater torque.

Exhaust noise, as we all remember from our yoof, does not equate to power or speed. It just makes you smile, although 99% of people think you're just a knob. That's what Monica Dribblethwaite told me outside the chip shop.

I don't want Honda-like exhaust noises, but equally I don't want obnoxious. My neighbours certainly don't!!
