With all the doom and gloom on fuel cost , even if you can afford it can you find some will Mad Max become reality?

One a trip back from the Welsh Cost to Shrewbury , 80 miles, I checked the mileage. Having filled up before I left , I topped the Roadster up 3 miles from home and it worked out at just over 35 MPG The first 40 miles were 'enthusiastic' with plent of 3rd gear and overtaking

The last 40 miles were steady at an average of around 40 mph. The same trip in a diesel Passat and being more sedate I get around 50mpg. I don't think 35 mpg was a bad outcome for a 3 litre V6.

I'd be intrested to know what other owners get, paticularly Aero's, as the Roadster is up for sale to hopefully make way for one

My average consumption (...I mean, my Moggie's consumption )
is under 10 liters per 100 km (to make is easy for you guys from UK )
This with a mix of "enthusiastic" (I really like that one )driving and cruising, which is, I always thought, quite OK for a 3.0 V6

...but 35 MPG should be something like 7 to 8 / 100, and that is is...

Maybe we should have 3 catagories for fuel consumption

Sedate

Enthusiastic

OVER Enthusiastic

Regardless of how I drive, I average 24mpg.

I get and average of 28.3 with a standard deviation of 3.9.
Best ever was 35.8 mpg.

That is in a +4 with the T16 engine driven all year round.
Winter is short thirsty runs, summer improves the MPG significantly.

Shooters probably not far off for the aero.

However I measure my consumption in SPG. (Smiles Per Gallon)

This having an inverse relationship to MPG, more SPG less MPG.

A-men!! This is exactly what I did in response to an article I read last week on how driving at 20mph gives you better MPG (ignoring the fact that the emissions rate goes through the roof at such low speeds)

Yep - SPG is where it's at.

But for the record, my 86 4/4 (1.6) has had a worst of 28mpg and a best of 34mpg, and is normally running at about 30mpg. This is with very enthusiastic driving (to the rev limit in all gears, cruising at 80 - 85 mph)

Worth every penny.
